those days we had
--dedicated this to my 49 adorable students
by pandora tsang
introduction
about students:
the age of the students of this summer camp ranges from 9 years old to 16 years old. the majority of them are local shenzhenese. several students come from afar like hunan province, jiangxi province.
about me:
i just got graduated from sun yat-sen university (zhongshan university) last july. english is my major. hoping that i could be lucky enough to become one of the admirable and excellent neworientalers(i make this word up to symbolize the particularity of neworiental staff), i joined in this prison break english-only summer camp organized by shenzhen neworiental as a teacher assistant. i stay with camp 1 students (from july 17th to july.26th) and camp 2 students (from july.29th to august.9th). there i met my 49 students who i will never ever forget. and those days that we spent together are the happiest time ever in my life. therefore i would like to take this opportunity to express my greatest gratitude to my dear students, thank you and i love you all, even though i didn’t make it to become one of the neworientalers, those days we have i think are enough for me.
chapter 1 work and pleasure
winston churchill said human beings are divided into two classes: first, those whose work is work and whose pleasure is pleasure; secondly, those whose work and pleasure are one. i think i belong to the second category. to me, my work is my pleasure, each working day seem to me like a holiday. during my stay with summer camp, i am glad that i could share the knowledge of english and some of my own philosophy of life with my little loveable students. moreover, i successfully performed my obligation as an assistant for anna, alex and q, teachers of this summer camp.
first, i set a good example by adhering to the english-only rule both in class and outside class. it complicates the communication sometimes with the students who have some trouble in understanding and speaking, however, it does encourage students to step up and speak english. pressure can push people to move on in a positive way.
second, i aid foreign teachers to coordinate the indoor and outdoor activities or games. i was very helpful when communicative link between foreign teachers and students fell apart, particularly during the outdoor games when it came to the time to make the rules of the game clear. i helped foreign teacher to repeat the rules in a way which is easier for students to catch the meaning with gesture, or sometimes utilizing cardboard, which the result has proved worked pretty well. most importantly, i think students all enjoyed our game. so when it comes to communication between people with different languages, smile is the best language ever in regardless of any territory and time.
thirdly, i take charge of the reading out loud in the morning. instead of reading the text book, i come up with my own handout covering lyrics, daily expression, and some great quotations or essays. also i correct the diary everyday, pick the students with the best essay to read in front of all, which i think encourage the students to write more and they begin to enjoy keeping a diary. here i would show one of our model diaries. and another. though it’s short and there are some mistakes, it reads nice. this is a good sign to learn english, because interest is the best teacher.
fourthly, i take care of students’ study and living need. for example, they can come to me when their shampoo or toothpaste is used up or their ball pen doesn’t work; or when students get sick or injured, they can also come to me for medicine, or i take them to see the doctor.
fifthly, for the first camp, i also helped with the news reporting, which cover photo taking and news writing. i updated the news in time so the anxious parents worrying about their kids felt relieved and happy after reading our news.
sixthly, i organized the theme party which included game” dare and truth”, “song race” ,”word chain”, “two minds”, ”graffiti (theme on olympic games)”. during these theme party, students and i all had a great fun. laughter went on and on. and most of the time, students would record those parties into their dairy, thinking of it as their best time of the day!
finally, i help students with the rehearsal for the show at the end of the camp, the performance including song, drama, high school musical, and dance. besides, i help students with emcee job on the stage.
now comes to a conclusion, i gave all i got to my students and this summer camp. and i believe that i am liked by all my students because i like them all. and this i think is the best reward ever for a teacher.
chapter 2 song and students
i scribbled down this essay the time i just got back from my first camp, permit me to quote it here. (http://user.qzone.qq.com/425810029)
ten days came to an end. way too much thought crossed my mind.
so this song of our camp, i think best tell what i am feeling now.
we have joy, we have fun,
we have season in the sun,
but the camp that we had,
were just like the season have all gone;
we might had lost our temper, we might had little unpleasant conflict,
we might have quarrel, we might have wept,
but the happiness that we enjoyed,
will be a diamond memory in your mind.
we hugged, and we cried, when we said farewell,
but we know this is not for good,
we will one day get together and have fun,
we will!
i just came back; all the emotions are just overwhelming.
i regret that i forget to say thank you to my lovely nice campers when we departed.
pandora will always have you in her mind.
super man, keeps being superb! we all take pride in you.
dinosaur keeps being cool! girls still are your fans.
lucy keeps being smart, and your big smile.
ashlee keeps being perfect, and active to lead!
amber keeps being kind and edgy.
ken, my little boy, i gave you my phone; you shall call me some day.
david, hope we could chat over the net and i am lucky to be interviewed.
naruto, a japanese name, very special, boy of principle.
ian, very clever, and unique.
aries, elevin, pandora wants you to be a bit more confident. just believe in yourself.
jake, your mom is moved when she watched your performance. i know deep in your heart, u will never want to let your parents down!
dason, you remind me of the days i had back in high school. still you needs to do something you have to do before u do something u wants to. we all know that this is the rule!
katy, don’t be mad when somebody else said u look like a cat. cat is lovely and i think it’s elegant. and i know next time, you will do much better!
may, nice name, same encouragement goes to you, you need to step up, and take the initiative.
lily, you have an amazing voice, but still u need to work hard on your study.
wendy, i admire her indeed! she is the youngest one, but she, who i think, is the most talented. i believe you’ll definitely have a bright future!
bush, peter parker, brilliant boys, but hey, you’ve got to study something!
same wishes go to the rest of the students who joined this summer camp.
still love,
pandora
song of west life: season in the sun. i picked it as the song of our camp. my students don’t really like it at the very beginning. but they tried to learn it, and sing it well. this really touched my heart, for their being so supportive and so understandable and cooperative. then in the end, they liked this song. when it came to the time to sing in public, they did one hell of job, the best ever, which i never would have expected. later they told me the song was a surprise gift for me. at that moment all the effort, sweat and toil, is worthwhile.
chapter 3 laughter and tear
first day of the camp, we played the ‘truth and dare’ game. for the dare, students thought up some really brilliant things, like holding one foot to hop barefooted around the circle one time; lying on the floor in the central of the circle to say out loud: i’m a pig, three times; and smelling the smelliest sock. it was funny, we all burst into laughter. in fact laughter helps with the icebreaking. when they arrived, totally strangers so most of them kept to themselves and remained silent. pretty dull. all in a sudden, they all became friends, talking happily and excitedly, joking and playing around. age difference was no more an issue.
final day of the camp, we put on our performance which i believed all the students had put their heart into it. parents are invited to come watch the show. so this day has long been expected. it was so sweet to watch my students confidently perform the show. standing at the back stage, i couldn’t help crying. words at that moment were too pale to describe my emotion. tear kept running down my cheek, when i tried to stop it, students who have come off the stage, rushed towards me and hugged me intensely. my view was blurry. they cried out. it really sucked to be parted. ten days came and went quickly. these days were far more than enough for us. in such a short time, we’ve grown attached to each other, and to those days we had. it’s so beautiful that the moment we know we are going to lose it, our heart ached. then we all wanted to cry.
i cherished both the moment we laughed together and the moment we cried together. they are surely the memorable time in my life.
conclusion
i fulfilled the mission as a teacher assistant, and was really a great hand for foreign teacher. moreover, due to my hard work, i became good friends of my students, and liked by all of students. i will never ever forget those days we had.
i felt grateful that shenzhen new oriental school gave me this great opportunity. through this experience, i’ve learnt as an educator, it’s more than teaching but giving. i’ve learnt as an educator, it’s more than knowledge but love.
due to the lack of educational experiences before, i had made some wrong judgments. then i’ve learnt greater effort is still required in this field. and i know that i am working on it! thank you for all people who support me!
