the fastest train in the world:
an englishman, a canadian, and an american prided themselves on the speed of the trains in their countries. the first to speak was the englishman.
“one day,” he said, “i went to edinburgh by the flying scotsman, (火车名)and as i looked out of the window at the telegraph poles, they seemed to form a fence. so great was the speed of the train. can you believe that?!”
the next to speak was the canadian.
“one day,” he said, “i went from montreal to vancouver by the transcontinental express(横穿大陆的特快列车). the railroad led through vegetable fields. there were tomatoes there, as well as cucumbers,(黄瓜) cauliflowers, (花椰菜)cabbages, beans, peas and so on! as i looked at them all i thought i was seeing a vegetable soup. so great was the speed of the train!”
“not bad,” said the american approvingly(满意地), “but listen to me: one day i was going from philadelphia to new york and my wife came to the station to see me off. as i leaned out(探身出去) of the window of my compartment(车厢) to kiss her, the train started, and... i was kissing a porter(行李搬运工) at the next station!”
