下面我们来看一个例句，这是一位政界人士被控受贿，前景可危。
例句-1：we should hear more evidence over the next few days. meanwhile, mr. wilson has to be very nervous. his reputation and indeed his position are on the line. unless mr. wilson is completely cleared of the accusation, he is sure to lose the election.
今后几天里我们会听到更多的证据。威尔逊先生现在一定非常紧张。他的名誉和地位都岌岌可危了。除非他能证明对他的指控都是不实之词，否则他肯定会落选。
to be on the line这个习惯用语是19世纪开始流行的，最初是指战争的前线，那里有遭到炮火袭击的危险。后来，on the line的意思有所扩大，可以指其他的危险或风险。
