it was difficult for most people to find a job twenty years ago. john, a boy of eighteen, finished middle school. he was in great need of a job: his father was hurt in an accident. his mother had to do some washing for the rich families. his two sisters were both at school. he had to bring some food home, or they all would be hungry.
the young man went to several factories. they wouldn’t use a thin boy like him. he knew himself very well: as a hungry man, he could only do some light work. he came to the centre of the town. some of the shops needed a few workers, but a lot of people were standing in line outside. of course he couldn’t push his way in them. （他并没有向他们一样等在那里）he thought for a while and came up to the sign “boy wanted”（“招收服务员”的牌子）. he picked it up and went in the office with it.
“what do you bring the sign in here for?” asked the shopkeeper.
“you don’t need it any more, sir,” said the boy with a smile. “i’m going to take the job.”
the shopkeeper was satisfied with（对……满意） him and employed（雇佣） him.
